Just in time for Valentine ’s Day, this week we in Sunday school are learning about what Jesus had to say about LOVE.
As Christians we are commanded to love one another. – Actually Jesus said that this would be the #1 way that other people will know that we are Christians. At least, it SHOULD be the #1 way that people know we are Christians.
Scripture this week: John 13:34-35
"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
The love that we show isn’t just simply being kind. It’s the same love that God has shown us in Jesus. This kind of love is forgiving, it’s sacrificial, and it’s full of grace and mercy especially for those that don’t deserve it.
Love is a concept that most children can easily identify with. Most of you have created safe and nurturing homes that are full of this kind of love. Kids begin to learn about God’s love as a heavenly father through your loving example as a parent. This month use meal time, chore time, bed time, drive time and other daily rhythms to point out examples of love to your children. Look for opportunities to encourage them to show forgiving-sacrificial-grace-and-mercy-filled love to others this month.
Next Steps: A few days before Valentine’s Day, sit down with your kid and talk about what it means to really love people. (Love means putting others before ourselves.) Then, cut out some paper hearts together and write on each one some ways to love others through kindness. Then, on Valentines Day, select a few and go do something kind.
